History: Samuel Merlotte was born into a very poor life. Born in Arkansas, Sam was abandoned by his biological parents, Joe-Lee and Melinda Mickens. After a while, he was adopted by Mitch and Sue Ann Merlotte, where he draws his last name from. He lived with them for a long time, as a normal young man. It wasn’t until his teenage years of life that his life changed forever. One day, he discovered a very interesting ability, one that he seemed to possess: he was a shifter—not a werewolf, but a shifter. The difference was that he had the ability to see an animal, and then become that same animal, in appearance. What Sam did not know was that his biological mother Melinda had the same abilities, abilities that passed to both Sam and his younger brother Tommy. When his adoptive parents discovered what he could do, they were frightened and confused. They then abandoned him, leaving Sam to take care of himself.
He was able to survive on his own for a long time, and eventually came to settle in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Slowly, but surely, he built himself a life in the small town, and at one point he became the proud owner of his own bar, Merlotte’s Bar & Grill. Many people in the town came to respect him, and soon his establishment grew into one of the busiest places in town, where people would come to have a drink, eat some good food, and socialize with one another.
At the same time, Sam’s always had issues of his own, one in the form of a young woman: Sookie Stackhouse. She was a waitress at Merlotte’s, but Sam came to have quite the crush on her. His problem was that for a long time, he never got up the courage to ask her out. He found this courage once the resident vampire in town had stolen her heart, but he failed miserably. Soon afterward, he became interested in finding out who his parents were, and he managed to trace them back to his birth state, Arkansas. By then, his parents had been reduced to a poverty state, with his little brother having to participate in dogfights to earn money (his mother claimed that she was “too old” to do it anymore). Trying to be a good son, he brought them back to Bon Temps, but Joe-Lee and Melinda went back to Arkansas, leaving Tommy in Bon Temps to fend for himself. So, Sam gave him a job, and to this day, he still hopes that Sookie will change her mind, and give him a fighting chance.

Another evening, another shift, right? Wait, Sam was always working; of course, what’s what you got when you owned your own business. The hours were endless, the pay varied a lot, and you never knew what could happen. This was especially true when your particular business was the local hangout spot as well. Merlotte’s Bar and Grill was the general “center” of Bon Temps, Lousiana, where people came to eat, drink, and basically have a good time. But, Merlotte’s gained its colorful personality from the people who came on a regular basis, and the people who worked there as well. One of these people was a young woman by the name of Sookie Stackhouse.
Sookie—she had been a good friend of Sam’s for a few years now, and he couldn’t help but smile at her every time he saw her. She was cute, sweet, and even though people thought she was a dumb blonde, but he knew they were all wrong. She just had a special ability, one that no one in this town would be able to understand or appreciate. As long as she didn’t peer in on his thoughts, Sam was quite fine with her working for him. Hopefully, it would bring them a lot closer together. Sam wasn’t sure how much longer he would be able to wait for her.
